LICHEN

Somber blossoms,
patiently,
inexorably,
return stone
to earth

  1. I agree with Diane, Susannah. It's quite a powerful little poem. I hope you like the image I chose to go with it— Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.

  2. The phrase "somber blossoms" is inspired. In my mind I've been substituting different adjectives just to see how they change the poem. And yes, I love your image. I'll be there this summer.

  3. Yes. So strong. And I just keep saying, "Somber blossoms" over and over to myself. My husband got a lichen book for Christmas this summer...there are so many kinds! xo

    Thanks all--and what a lovely image you chose to go with it! I read somewhere that lichen are immortal...such amazing things scratching out life from bare rock.

  5. I love this poem also. My sister was a lichenologist. Since her passing the lichen have indeed seemed somber, but then what lifts me up is that the work of the lichen is to return stone to earth. All things old become new again. I like it. Thanks for this image.

  6. Now that's the way to capture something that often goes unseen. Very nice!
